A Chicago man who was being held at DuPage County Jail was accused of trying to orchestrate his ex-wife's murder from his jail cell.
John Johnson, 41, of the 5800 block of Adams Street was charged Tuesday morning with solicitation of murder after investigators say he tried to hire a hitman to kill his ex-wife, who lives in Lombard.
The investigation began several weeks ago when an informant told police Johnson said that he wanted his wife murdered and that he was willing to pay $3,000 to have it done. From there, DuPage County Sheriff's detectives posed a deputy as the hired hitman.
"Johnson contracted the undercover deputy and solicited him to murder his ex-wife," a news release from the sheriff's office stated.
Johnson had been in DuPage County Jail since last fall for violating of a order of protection his wife had against him. He is set to appear in court Wednesday morning, when a new bond amount will be set.
