Whether it’s getting greener or getting cleaner, residents and businesses came out in droves to recycle their electronics at MacSpecialist’s Reboot: A Consumer Electronics Recycling Event in Villa Park.

In all, more than 30,000 pounds of computers, televisions, printers, small electronics and scrap plastic was brought in April 19 to be recycled.

Amy Bogatto, training and marketing manager at MacSpecialist, said this was the second recycling event the company has held at its Villa Park location.

“We have found from our customers that they’re looking for a way to dispose of their electronics, and there aren’t many environmentally friendly ways to do so,” she said.

Bogatto said there was about 5,000 more pounds of electronics recycled at this year’s event than last and most of the items recycled were old and obsolete.

“Part of it is spring cleaning, but a big part of it is attributed to being green minded,” she said.

Bogatto said MacSpecialist hired a group to manage the disposal of the electronics, and it melts down and recycles anything that cannot be reused.

Laura Glaza, director of marketing communications for the Conservation Foundation of DuPage County, was at the event. She said she believes the increase in recycling has been brought on by recent television shows and movies about the environment.

“With awareness comes action,” Glaza said. “Five or 10 years ago, people were inclined to throw their (electronics) in the Dumpster behind their work.”
