After scoring 15 unanswered points to grab a one-point lead with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter on Saturday, Montini appeared to have the necessary momentum to propel itself into the 5A quarterfinals.
 
But Marian Central Catholic quarterback Jon Budmayr had other ideas.
 
The junior signal-called answered by leading his team on an 80-yard drive that culimated in the go-ahead score and the Hurricanes went on to a 29-15 win in Lombard.
 
With the victory, Marian Central moves on to face Nazareth while Montini ends the season with a 9-2 mark.
 
Scoreless at halftime, the visitors found the end zone twice in the third quarter to pull out in front 14-0.
 
An 8-yard TD run by Tom DiCristina and the ensuing two-point conversion on a pass from DiCristina to Johnny Borsellino brought the Broncos to within six with 10:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.
 
Then, after a Hurricane turnover, Montini covered 61 yards on 13 plays, the last of which a crazy sequence that gave the home team their first lead.
 
On third down from the MCC 8-yard line, DiCristina scrambled, was hit at the four and fumbled forward where Borsellino recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.
 
The Hurricanes took over at their own 20 with 5:00 left in the game and covered 80 yards in just eight plays, highlighted by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Budmayr to Andrew Stochl.
 
Doug Simpson added a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:49 remaining to put the game out of reach.
 
“The old quarterback got us,” said Montini head coach Chris Andriano. “He was good. I thought that when we came back and took the lead we'd be able to slow him down, make some plays and get a stop. But he was really special today, especially in the second half.”
