An all-start cricket match between Pakistani and Indian players that could set the stage for cricket to become an Olympic sport by the time the 2016 Olympics are held has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 27 at Indian Chase Meadows Park in Bolingbrook.
Talat Rashid, organizer of the Bolingbrook Cricket Club, said the match will pit top players from two Chicago area cricket leagues, said the match is being held to promote the sport for possible future inclusion into the Olympic games.
“That has been a goal for some time, and if it works well we hope to have cricket announced at least as a demonstration sport by 2010, with the goal of having it placed on the official Olympic venue in 2016,” Rashid said.
“We think the spot has appeal to everyone, and we expect the event to receive national and international media exposure,” Rashid said.
Players will be selected by a panel over the next week to participate in the event.
The match will be free and open to the public.
Rashid said organizers expect about 3,000 spectators to attend the event, including members of the Chicago City Council and members of Chicago 2016, the committee trying to bring the Olympics to Chicago in 2016.
A handful of members of the Bolingbrook Cricket Club are expected to be on the team, Rashid said.
