Three Lisle residents were honored with Pillar Awards at the Lisle Board meeting May 21 for portraying excellence in character throughout the past six months.

The awards winners were recognized by the Character Counts committee for displaying one of the six pillars of character; trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Cindy Pistone, a senior at Lisle High School, was the only recipient in attendance. She received a Pillar Award for her trustworthiness. Brett Lauten, the school resource officer, said Pistone does great things everyday, but he nominated her for the award after she turned in a large sum of money she found in the school locker room in December.

Pistone said she turned the money in simply because it was the right thing to do, and she would hope that anyone else would have done the same.

“It was Christmastime and it was probably someone’s Christmas money,” Pistone said. “If I had lost the money I would have wanted it returned.”

Mayor Joseph Broda presented the award to Pistone, giving her a few words of encouragement that were drowned out by applause. Broda told her how proud she should be to have won this award, and that she is a perfect example of what Character Counts represents.

Other award winners were Richard Kovling and Agnes McInerney.

Kovling recently died, but was honored for citizenship. He was a member of the committee for Character Counts and was an active supporter of the Lisle community. He volunteered his time and effort at numerous community events.

McInerney was presented with a Pillar Award for caring. She has been a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for the last 14 years where she delivered food to homes twice a week and has recruited at least eight other volunteers to the program.

Pillar Awards have been presented to Lisle residents every six months since 2004.
