Cathy Hlohowskyj has always been interested in gardening without chemicals and decided the DG Organic Gardeners club was for her.

The club is dedicated to growing plants the natural way. Members do not add chemicals or growth enhancements but build healthy soil through compost and strengthen native plants.

“We come together as a fun group of people that are dedicated to not using chemicals,” Hlohowskyj said.

Each member of the group tries to bring new expertise with growing tomatoes, butterflies and insects and worm composting.

“We are about educating the members of the community about organic gardening,” Hlohowskyj said. “It is not scary, it’s cheaper and rewarding.”

The DG Organic Gardeners were formed in the early 1970s and died off for a while. A group of residents got together to revitalize the group, which still is going strong, Hlohowskyj said.

There are about 35 members who have joined to enjoy nature together and learn how to grow on their own.

“We got so used to conveniences,” Hlohowskyj said. “I don’t think any of us are purists. We just try our best. I educate myself and learn what is the most important thing to grow organically.”

The group has started a grant program where they will be attending schools and organizations to help them start a native plant or vegetable garden.

“The next generation can learn this,” Hlohowskyj said about going to teach children in schools. “It is easy and not scary.”

Favorite flower
Milkweed because it is the host plant for the Monarch butterfly. They are native and beautiful plants.

“Organic gardening is good for the soul and spirit and cleans our plants and brings back native animals,” Hlohowskyj said.

Philosophy
“Organic gardening brings about healing of the Earth in your yard and brings healing to yourself,” Hlohowskyj said.
