LEMONT
CLASS 2A
REGIONAL Evergreen Park, Saturday, Feb. 4
SECTIONAL Lemont (individual), Saturday, Feb. 11; Fenton (team), Tuesday, Feb. 21
OUTLOOK Coming off a 49-19 dual meet win over Shepard on Jan. 26, Lemont will look to sustain its success in the postseason. The Indians enter this weekend’s Evergreen Park regional as one of the elite Class 2A teams in Illinois. Lemont is ranked No. 2 in the state, according to illinoismatmen.com. Unfortunately for the Indians, the top-ranked team — four-time Class 2A state champion Montini — is also in the regional. And only one of them can advance to sectionals as a team.

Some key dual meet wins have included Kaneland (38-21), Joliet West (46-27), Wilmington (34-30) and Yorkville (51-26). Lemont also came in third place at the Hinsdale Central and Palatine tournaments which featured a number of larger Class 3A programs.

The team has been led this season by Christos Giatras (ranked No. 3 at 182), Jake Latanski (No. 5 at 126), Mark Kirkman (No. 5 at 160), Glen Malecki (No. 6 at 132), Eric Kirkman (No. 6 at 170), Jake Kaminsky (No. 7 at 152) and John Tomala (No. 7 at 195).

In 2010-11, the Indians closed out the campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Class 2A dual team state tournament. Latanski came in fourth place two years ago at 103 pounds and finished last season with 36 wins after winning a regional at 112. Malecki posted a 31-13 record at 125 and Giatras had a 36-15 mark at 189. Sectional qualifiers from last year include Bobby Bromberek (138), Kaminsky, Mark Kirkman, Eric Kirkman and Tomala.

In addition to Montini, Saturday’s regional also will include Fenton, St. Laurence, Kennedy, Little Village, Morgan Park, Solorio Academy, Evergreen Park, Nazareth Academy and Riverside Brookfield.
