May's two goals lead Hinsdale Central to sectional title

HINSDALE – Lyons Township had been salivating at the opportunity to get another shot at Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils beat LT on penalty kicks on April 30 in a game that decided the West Suburban Silver title. Round two between the rivals came in a sectional final on Friday at Central and the Red Devils won again, this time 3-1. ... Read More »

First-place relay leads 13 York entries to state

CAROL STREAM – Earlier in the season, York topped Lake Park at an invite, but the three-time defending state champion Lancers got the best of the Dukes on May 17 at the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional. Lake Park won the sectional with 147 points and Wheaton North edged York for second. The Falcons had 105 points to the Dukes’ 103.

IC soccer's run ends in supersectional

HINCKLEY – The IC girls soccer team failed to get to the program's first Final Four appearance after losing to Johnsburg 2-1 in Tuesday's supersectional at Hinckley-Big Rock. Johnsburg scored twice in the first 10 minutes and a first-half penalty kick goal from senior Angela Toritto got IC back within one, but the equalizing goal never came.

Semifinal rout sends Dukes to regional championship

ELMHURST – One down. The York softball team won its playoff opener Tuesday in dominant fashion, 12-0 over Lincoln Park at Bryan Middle School. The Dukes plated 10 runs in the first and cruised to a five-inning victory.

Sports

LEMONT – Showing a flair for the dramatic, Lemont baseball closed out the regular season in thrilling fashion Monday. Capping off a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, Matt Kaminski drove in the winning run as the Indians beat Joliet West 11-10. A two-run homer by Jake Latz had knotted up the score.
BURBANK – If Tuesday is any indication, Rylie Jay might want to make Queen of Peace her new home field. Lemont’s sophomore shortstop had a career day at the plate during the Indians’ playoff opener, going 3-for-3 with three home runs and nine RBIs in the team’s 22-0 win over Noble Street Charter in a Class 3A regional semifinal in Burbank.
NEW LENOX – In practice Tuesday, Kim Jerantowski was finding her range on set pieces. So when an opportunity arose for a free kick early in Wednesday's sectional semifinal against Joliet Catholic, the Lemont junior stepped forward without hesitation.
LEMONT – After tying for the South Suburban Blue conference championship a year ago, Lemont’s baseball team wanted the outright title this spring. The Indians dominated their side of the conference on their way to accomplishing that goal. They boasted a 17-1 league mark heading into Wednesday’s finale against Argo.
LEMONT – From his seat at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday, Cody Caballero hoped to pick up a tip or two as he watched left-handed pitchers Chris Sale and CJ Wilson go up against each other. But the way the Lemont senior has been throwing this spring, he doesn’t appear to need much help. Primarily a reliever a year ago, the lefty has excelled in his move to the starting rotation, compiling an 8-1 record after recording the win in Tuesday’s 10-0 rout over Hillcrest.
LEMONT - Backed by a 4-for-4 performance at the plate from Lauren May, Lemont's softball team picked up an 11-2 victory over Bremen Tuesday. May knocked out a triple and two doubles and drove in five runs.
LEMONT – From the moment she stepped onto a soccer field at the age of 4, Kim Jerantowski took a liking to distributing the ball to teammates. Years later, as a junior at Lemont, nothing much changed for the Indians’ midfielder, who is equally adept at finding the back of the net.
Lemont High School players are debuting in the spotlight this spring for area baseball and softball teams – from seniors stepping into leadership roles to underclassmen earning starting varsity jobs.
OAK FOREST - Backed by outstanding pitching and solid defense, Lemont's baseball team took control of the South Suburban Blue conference with a 7-1 victory over Oak Forest Tuesday. The Indians also beat their long-standing rival on Monday.
LEMONT – The Lemont girls soccer team passed one test last weekend in the Quad Cities. This weekend, the Indians face an even greater challenge. For the 10th consecutive year, the squad is hosting the Lemont Invitational, which features the likes of Waubonsie Valley, Sandburg and Andrew.
LEMONT - Batting around in both the first and second innings, Lemont's softball team cruised to a 10-0 win over TF North Tuesday.
Graham Pocic, a former Lemont High School and Illinois football star, took another step toward making his NFL dream come true Sunday when he signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent.
LEMONT - Like any potential prospect, Graham Pocic's hope was to hear his name called during last weekend's NFL draft. But the Lemont High School graduate was also realistic, realizing that offseason surgery to his shoulder which limited his exposure to teams at the next level could be a deterrent.
LEMONT — Talking to Rylie Jay, one could get the impression that the Lemont shortstop is off to a slow start this spring. Admittedly tough on herself, the sophomore believes there is room for improvement. And that can only be a scary thought for opposing pitchers considering Jay was hitting .610 (25-for-41) with five home runs heading into this week.
