Lemont, IL -

The turnout was not especially large at the first forum to develop a new, long-range plan for the Lemont Public Library, but officials said it still was productive.

“We had hoped for more people,” Library Director Sandra Pointon said. “But we were delighted by the enthusiastic participation, lively conversation and ideas generated by the people who attended.”

About 12 people attended the first of the two discussions, held Oct. 15, to determine what the library can do to meet residents’ needs now and in the future.

Karen Enyart, a frequent library patron and one of the forum attendees, suggested the library add more book discussion groups. Currently, she goes to the Homer Township Public Library to participate in book clubs.

“There is one on Saturday mornings now, but they seem to be a select group,” she said. “I’d like to see more evening discussions as well as different genres of literature, (such as) chick lit, mystery, teen, etc.”

She also is interested in seeing an author fair or more programs with visiting authors.

Lemont resident Corrine Ptacek-Reavley suggested library officials pool their resources.

“The library should work with the school district to promote and encourage the school’s recommended summer reading list and other projects throughout the year in order to be more integrated in our community,” she said.

Residents also suggested library officials do a better job of promoting the facility.

“I learned about services I was not aware that they provided, and I am a frequent user so it was extremely informational,” Ptacek-Reavley said.

Enyart thought the library could do a better job of marketing itself.

“I still think most people still think of the library as a place to go to just borrow books or find a quiet place to study or read,” she said. “It really is a rich community resource for so many other things.”

Library officials also are trying to garner feedback through surveys. Some of the survey questions ask patrons why they come to the library, how often they visit, what programs they would like to see offered and what improvements can be made. Officials are not just seeking answers from frequent library patrons but also residents that do not use the library.

To date, 180 surveys have been completed, Pointon said.

A committee comprised of library staffers, board members, residents and a member of the Friends of the Library will review the results.

Overall, Reavley is pleased with her library experience.

“The library excels at friendly and helpful people which is key, providing the community with a wide variety of reading selections, (and) a relatively robust reference selection,” she said.

Enyart said the library does a great job providing resources for patrons of all ages, through the online catalog and shared library network.

“But I’m afraid most people are not even aware of how much is out there — and that is mostly all free,” she said.

She is pleased with Pointon’s initiatives.

“She has brought some great ideas and programs to the library,” she said. “I am very encouraged with (her) and looking forward to an exciting future at the library,” she said.

Residents and business owners in the Lemont Public Library district are encouraged to attend the next forum. Light refreshments will be served. Complimentary book bags will be provided by the Friends of the Lemont Library.
