Lemont, IL -

Dawn Pechukas would not trade her experience as principal of Old Quarry Middle School for the world.

“My time here has been extremely rewarding,” she said. “Very much a learning experience.”

Pechukas will now take that experience with her, plus the knowledge she gained as assistant principal at Old Quarry before that, as she heads to Liberty Junior High School in New Lenox. She will serve as the school’s assistant principal for the 2009-10 school year.

On the surface, the move might not make sense. However, to Pechukas, this is a step up in her career.

“I really liked the position as assistant principal,” she said. “I dealt more with the kids and teachers, and that’s where my true love is. A lot of my time as principal is taken up in meetings. I like having more direct contact with kids and teachers.”

Pechukas first served Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A as assistant principal for two years. She was named principal in 2005.

During her tenure, she was instrumental in working with the National Middle School Association in their recent evaluation of Old Quarry Middle School as part of their 10 year anniversary. Old Quarry received high marks from the association and has been working on a school-wide plan to continue to provide a high-level education for middle school students in District 113A.

“Dawn has led us to great places,” said Old Quarry teacher Michelle Nevin. “She has led us with humor and integrity. We want to thank her for the last six years.”

Superintendent Tim Ricker said he wishes Pechukas well on this new chapter in her career.
“She will be missed by staff and students alike,” he said.

Pechukas has no doubt what she will miss most about District 113A.
“The staff and the kids,” she said.

She will begins her new role at Liberty Junior High School July 1.

District 113A school officials have posted the Old Quarry position on its Web site.

Ricker is organizing a screening committee consisting of staff, parents and administrators to screen and make recommendations to the Board of Education on Pechukas’ prospective successor. Parents or staff members interested in serving on this screening committee should consult the district Web page or contact Ricker directly at timricker@sd113a.org.
