Scholarships
• Kelly Kardas of Lemont received a National Science Foundation scholarship to major in secondary math education at Illinois State University.

• Deirdre Fisher, Rebecca George and Catherine McCermott each received a $1,500 scholarship by the Lemont Junior Women’s Club. The awards were based on Lemont residents who have made outstanding contributions to the community through volunteerism.

• Joseph Karpiak of Lemont received the Presidential Scholarship from St. Joseph’s College, the most prestigious award offered. This full-tuition scholarship is awarded a few incoming freshmen who demonstrate outstanding academic and leadership abilities after undergoing an application and interview process.

• Claudia Chlebek of Lemont was awarded the Fulbright Full Research Grant for $30,000 of support for nine months of study and research. She will used the Fulbright Full Research Grant to work toward a two-year International Masters in Economics, State and Society degree at University College London. In addition to the Fulbright Grant, Chlebek has been awarded the European Union's distinctive Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. This scholarship will fully fund both the first year of Claudia's studies at University College London and her second year of studies at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Achievements
• Bethany Hoster and Chris Zakhem of Lemont were inducted into Benet Academy’s National Honors Society. These students were selected for their scholarship, service, character, and leadership.

• Melissa May of Lemont was presented the “Outstanding Freshman Leadership Award” at the Marquette University Student Recognition Program.

• Sarah Smierciak of Lemont received a Language Immersion Grant to continue her Arabic studies in Cairo during the summer. She plans to remain in Cairo for a semester abroad in fall 2010.

• Melissa Berardi of Lemont worked in a team of eight students from Lewis University to develop a contact management tool for the Northwest Side Housing Center in Chicago. The Lewis students developed a tool and database to manage contacts, perform e-mail blasts, record donations, and automate sending reminders for donations.

• At the Joliet Junior College Web Design Contest, four Lemont High School students won honors. Nick Ruggiero came in third place with his site for the Terry Plumbing Company and was awarded $100. Danny Banas earned honorable mention for accolades, designing a site for the Lemont High School’s speech team. In the group contest, Zack Bruce and Kyle Ferguson teamed up to design a site for the Lemont Police Department and also won honorable mention.

• Lemont High School juniors Eliza Gawenda and Clare Grall came in first in Oral Presentation category at the 2009 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Finals. Their chosen Oral Presentation topic for Division 3AA was Graph Theory: Networks & Circuits. In the Geometry Written Team category, sophomores Arthur Laciak, Jimmy Myers, Vijay Rajendran, Clare Rogers, Paige Szymanski and Nick Taluzek teamed up for a seventh-place finish among 39 teams. Lemont finished 18th as a team in the Division 3AA competition, which included 55 schools from throughout the state.

• The following students from Lemont High School were inducted into the French National Honor Society: Heidi Arenberg, Anna Blob, Victoria Blum, Bridget Carr, Haley Carr, Kevin De Los Reyes, Andrea Earnest, Danielle Keefe, Delia Ercoli, Leticia Garcia, Amanda Gumber, Julie Hankes, Keely Halper, Emily Hartl, Nathan Kievert, Beth Kowalczyk, Amanda Latz, Kelly Lyons, Molly Mazur, Laura Mitchell, Tim Peebles, Kristina Pietka, Emilija Pranckevicius, Clare Rogers, Jessica Solarski, Danielle Susz, Ethan Wood, Christina Zalewski and Beatrice Zelvyte. In order to be inducted into the society, the student had to have a cumulative “A” average in French as well as a “B” average in their other courses.

• Each month, Lemont High School honors a student from each grade level as “Student of the Month” for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school’s various departments from month to month. The following students were honored:
APRIL Senior Heidi Arenberg (foreign language), junior Za’Cora Quinn (learning resource center), sophomore Raneen Zubi (science) and freshman Paul Schochat (music)
MAY Senior Regan Menconi (business), junior Lukas Kolbrecki (physical education), sophomore Matthew McKenna (driver education) and freshman Kevin Driscoll (health)

• Lemont High School senior Sean Armbruster posted a runner-up finish among more than 40 competitors in the 3D Architectural CAD division of the 2009 Illinois Drafting Educators Association State Competition. The challenge was to create a 3D solid model of an architectural design using CAD software. Armbruster’s performance represents the highest finish ever for a Lemont student in the competition. Armbruster and fellow senior Nick Lawrence earned a trip to the state competition thanks to their efforts at the IDEA Regional. Lawrence and Armbruster finished first and second, respectively, in the 3D Architectural CAD division at the regional.

• The following students won individual awards at the 2009 South Cook Math Bowl: second grade: Brendan Geraghty -first place; third grade: Josh Reitz – second place; fouth grade: Jimmy Sliwa – second  place; fourth grade: Kevin Tuscher - fifth place; seventh grade: Jarrod Hanson – fourth  place; eighth grade: Jack Corrigan – first place; MVP Medal first-fourth grades – Josh Reitz; and MVP Medal fifth-eighth grades – Jarrod Hanson. The following students won team awards: Division A first/second grades – third place Taylor Shimkus, Jacob Pulido, Brendan Geraghty, Lucas Zaczek; Division B third/fourth grades – first place Josh Reitz, Evie Conway, Kevin Tuscher, Jimmy Sliwa; Division C fifth/sixth grades – fourth place Misbah Chagpar, Claire Gagen, Justin Whitehouse, Andrew Trick; Division D  seventh/eighth grades – first place Jarrod Hanson, Zak Krepps, Joe Ruggiero, Jack Corrigan.

Military notes
• Air Force Airman 1st Class Michael Pawlak of Lemont graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
