Lemont, IL -

As with so many conveniences today, flying from one place to another is no longer considered a luxury.

It is considered a necessity devoid of glamour for the common person.

However, when considering stories told by former World War II marine pilot Clarence “Clancy” Hess about his flying experiences — especially during WWII — we might all consider air travel luxurious by comparison.

In a Veteran’s Day commemoration program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, Hess will be at the Lemont Public Library, 50 E. Wend St., to share wartime stories.

Noting he is a frequent speaker on the subject and a regular library patron, the local veteran is sure to be a big hit, said Debbie Somchay, adult services librarian and the event coordinator.

Getting to know Hess through his patronage of the library, Somchay said he is known for presentations that include lively and entertaining stories.

“He’s a fascinating and delightful person,” she said. “He’s in his 80s and has just had such an interesting life that he tells stories galore. After his military career, he was a pilot for American Airlines, and he’s still very involved with the aviation community.”

According to Vincent Lynn of the Huntley-based Sun City Flyers Club, Hess includes storyboards that make an excellent reference point for many of his stories.

“The pictures you took with your mother’s box Brownie (camera) and the USO Tour photos all served to help us see the world as you saw it in those days,” Lynn told Hess. “As a matter of fact, we found your presentation so interesting that we submitted the story to the local newspaper.”

Boy Scout Troop 149 will add to the program by presenting a color guard and bugler during the evening. Also, refreshments will be served.

“We would also encourage all attendees to bring an item to include for our Veterans’ assistance drive,” said Sandra Pointon, library director.

The library is collaborating with the Women’s Auxiliary of Lemont 22 Honor VFW Post 5819 to assist local veterans, and Pointon said donations of non-perishable food and household goods may be dropped off at the library through Tuesday, Nov. 11.

A full list suggested items is available on the library’s Web site.

Concluding that they are pleased to offer the program and help the Women’s Auxiliary, Pointon said.

“The library feels it is important to do our part to honor veterans on such an important day,” Pointon said. “We want to honor those who’ve served in recent wars as well as those who are no longer with us.”

“This is a program people won’t want to miss,” Somchay said. “I’m delighted that Clancy has made time for us in his busy schedule.”
