Westchester Library is ‘reaching out’ to patrons
I recently attended a first time home buyers seminar at the Westchester Public Library. The seminar was an example of how the library is reaching out to patrons with informative programs that go beyond the books and videos that we have come to expect from them.
The presentation was very informative, and I learned a lot about the opportunities and tax incentives that are available.
I want to commend Ann Weaver of the Westchester Public Library for organizing and hosting this timely program. The presenters, Bob and Mary Bakas of Gobber Real Estate, did a good job of explaining the many opportunities available to first time home buyers in an unbiased non-commercial presentation.
Libraries are becoming the new cultural and social centers of our communities. This type of programming shows how the library is receptive and responsive to the needs of the its patrons and the community at large.

School revenue should come from income taxes
Yes there has been talk for years about increasing income taxes rather than relying so heavily on property taxes. However, these discussions have been generally aimed at removing or dramatically reducing the 60-65 percent of real estate property taxes going to the various public school districts.
The comment regarding “shifting of the burden from property owners to income earners is a fairer way to fund state operations” is inapplicable, as the state currently received zero dollars from real estate property taxes. If the state did receive revenue from property taxes, it is highly unlikely our legislators would be so generous in granting real estate tax exemptions, tax freezes and other manipulations.
A change in funding from real estate property taxes to the state income tax for educational purposes would also reduce the inequity in the way commercial and industrial property are taxed compared with homeowners.
