Riverside, IL -

The Riverside Police Department wants to remind parents and children of some simple ways to stay safe this Halloween.

Halloween trick-or-treat hours will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.

For costumes, police suggest choosing a costume that is made from flame-retardant material, wear masks that fit properly and adding reflective tape to your child’s costume or candy bag to increase visibility.  If you are using face paint, make sure the paint is nontoxic and hypoallergenic.

While trick-or-treating, children should be well supervised by an adult. Older children should trick or treat in large groups in well-known neighborhoods. All children should follow traffic signals and stick to the sidewalks on well-lit streets. Children should also carry a flashlight and cell phone with them.

Police also want children and parents to be safe while eating candy. Have your children bring home all their candy before eating it. Tell your children not to eat anything that isn’t commercially wrapped, and throw out any treats that are homemade or if they appear to be tampered with.
