For those La Grange residents who don’t want to wait until Election Day 2009 to get involved in the political process, the Citizens’ Council of La Grange is looking for new members.
The volunteer council will host a meeting for people interested in participating in the caucus at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday 9/10 at Village Hall, 53 S. La Grange Road.
The council interviews, evaluates and endorses what its members believe to be the best qualified candidates for positions on the Village Board as well as the La Grange Library and Park boards.
Members represent 11 districts in the village, with no more than eight delegates per district.
“We’re looking for what I call geographical diversity,” said council president Orlando Coryell. “We have some districts where we only have one or two.”
Particularly weak in representation is the village’s southeast section and the area near Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, Coryell said.
“I always worry about that because we like to have the whole area represented,” he said. “The Historical District seems to be more active every year.”
To date, there are 34 members on the roster with another six residents who have expressed interest, Coryell said.
“That’s about half of where we think we should be,” he said. “Ideally, the council should have 88 members to fully cover all districts.”
Delegates must be registered voters and have resided in La Grange for at least a year.
Besides Coryell, officers include Joan Vander Linde, vice president; Rose Naseef, secretary; Kathleen Deane, treasurer; and Rob Pierson, roster secretary.
