Is Court pick the right one?
President Obama spoke of “the great American dream” in defense of his appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the high court. I would ask this question: What about Frank Ricci and the other brave white firefighters in New Haven, Conn.? Don’t they have a right to “the great American dream” also? It would appear that Sotomayor thinks not.

Judging by her opinion on the firefighters case and other racially charged statements, one could get the impression that she has an “attitude” toward us white folks. Should prejudice such as this be allowed on the Supreme Court?

Sale of land would help
My family and I support the sale of 2.82 acres of Gordon Park for the same reasons we worked so hard to support it during the campaign season last fall.

The sale is a major victory for every resident of La Grange. When the underutilized 2.82-acre corner of Gordon Park is sold, the Park District will generate millions of dollars in sale proceeds and in-kind consideration that will be poured back into the park, making it a destination  we and our children will enjoy for decades. Contrary to the detractors’ position on the matter, the proceeds are not going to be used to clean up a nonexistent financial mess that resulted from the renovation of the recreational center. We’re trading a 17-acre wasteland for a 15-acre gem.

Unfortunately, with every legal stall tactic being employed by the detractors, both the Park District’s existing budget and the potential proceeds from the sale are being wasted. Without the sale proceeds, we will continue to be burdened by a poorly lit, mostly hidden park that floods after a short rainfall. With the sale, we will gain a beautifully rebuilt 15-plus-acre park with a functional and environmentally friendly drainage system, splash park, amphitheatre, baseball/softball fields, soccer and football fields, functional restrooms, a butterfly garden, a walking path, an improved intersection at La Grange Road and Ogden Avenue and more — with no increase in taxes. The La Grange Park District should be commended for putting together such a brilliant deal, especially in this period of economic difficulty.  It is the opportunity of a lifetime.
