Springfield, IL -

A program for senior volunteers to help other seniors over the telephone during an emergency will begin in January.

A amendment to the Illinois Act on Aging was approved by the governor Aug. 13 to use older adult volunteers to perform telephone reassurance activities and outreach for a three-year demonstration period.

The program is part of the Emergency Home Response Program, launched in 2007 and managed by the Department on Aging. The program provides two-way voice pagers that automatically link seniors to a support center that can quickly send help in case of an emergency.

State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-4th District, of Maywood, who signed the bill, said the program can improve the quality of life for seniors living independently in their own homes.

“A senior may feel more comfortable speaking with an older adult volunteer during an emergency,” she said.
