BROOKFIELD
Man charged with DUI
A man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after being pulled over at about 6:20 p.m. Oct. 9 in the 8800 block of Burlington Avenue.

Edward Sopczynski, 53, of Lyons was seen stumbling while getting into his vehicle, and a witness said she believed he might be intoxicated.

Police stopped Sopczynski’s car in the southbound lane of Custer Avenue, facing the wrong way.

Sopczynski’s blood alcohol content was 0.236 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He was issued citations for driving on the wrong side of the road and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Home burglarized
A home in the 9500 block of Jefferson Avenue was burglarized at about 9 a.m. Oct. 10. A neighbor found that the back door had a broken window, and several drawers in the home were open. The neighbor said some jewelry items may have been taken.

Radio stolen from tractor
A man called police at about 4:15 p.m. Oct. 11 to report his CB radio had been stolen from his tractor in the 9100 block of Plainfield Avenue. The radio is valued at $400.

Officers found the driver side vent window had been smashed, and the radio was missing. The theft occurred between noon Oct. 10 and 4 p.m. Oct. 11.

Radio removed from van
A man’s CD player/radio was stolen from his van at about 4:20 p.m. Oct. 11 on the 3800 block of Morton Avenue.

Police observed the passenger side window was broken and that the lock mechanism on the passenger door was pulled out, along with the sliding rear passenger door lock. The incident took place between 9 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 a.m. Oct. 10.

RIVERSIDE
Man faces DUI charge
A man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after being arrested at about 1:10 a.m. Oct. 7 at 26th Street and Veterans Drive in North Riverside.

Guillermo Arauz, 29, of River Forest allegedly drove through a red light at 26th Street and Harlem Avenue, police said. An officer on patrol clocked his vehicle traveling at 49 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to police.

Arauz failed field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said. He refused the breathalyzer test.
He was cited for disobeying a traffic signal, speeding and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

DUI alleged
A man was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after being arrested at about 1 a.m. Oct. 8 at Harlem Avenue and 38th Place in Lyons.

Mario Hernandez, 33, of Chicago was stopped at the intersection of Harlem and Ogden avenues not proceeding through the green light, police said. He then changed lanes out of the right-hand turn lane in the middle of the intersection and drove through.

After conducting a traffic stop, police said the man did not have a driver’s license on file. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested, according to the report.

After a fingerprint inquiry, officers found out the man’s real name and that his license was suspended for a previous DUI, police said. He refused to take a breathalyzer test, according to police.

He was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, and improper lane usage.

Car strikes tree
A man was charged with two counts of driving under in the influence of alcohol after being arrested at about 10 p.m. Oct. 8 at Barrypoint and Bloomingbank roads.

Billy Allen, 22, of Cicero was driving down Barrypoint Road and hit a tree, police said. Allen was taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood and agreed to a blood test at the hospital. His blood-alcohol content was unknown as of press time.

He was released from the hospital after being treated, police said. He also was cited traffic citations for driving in the wrong lane, damage to village property and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, according to reports.

Accident leads to arrest
A man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after a rollover accident at about 3:50 a.m. Oct. 11 in the 200 block of East Quincy Street.

Timothy Gavin, 22, 3246 S. Park Ave., Brookfield was driving eastbound on Quincy Street when he drove off the roadway and struck a tree, causing the car to roll over, police said.

The man was able to get out of his car outside the accident, police said. Officers found a plastic bag in the car containing 1.8 grams of a green, leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, according to police. He was transported to Loyola Hospital in Maywood and was arrested after being treated, police said.

He also was charged with possession of marijuana, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, possession of drug paraphernalia and operation of an uninsured vehicle, according to police.

LA GRANGE
Car burglary reported
A car burglary was reported at 11 a.m. Oct. 11 in the 200 block of South Ashland Avenue, police said. Several cassette tapes and insurance cards were reported stolen from the unlocked car, according to police.

WESTCHESTER
Wood chipper stolen
A wood chipper was reported stolen from a landscape business at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 7. The machine was taken in a parking lot of Ubee Landscaping, 9825 Drury Lane, at the time of the theft. The value is estimated at $5,000.

Pharmacy worker arrested
A Jewel-Osco pharmacy technician was charged with felony theft after she was seen by store security taking two bottles of prescription drugs at 9:39 p.m. Oct. 6, police said.

Police said  Jennifer Covington, 24, of Forest Park was observed taking a bottle of Norco and a bottle of Vicodin ES from the store, 2128 S. Manheim Road.

The drugs are valued at $367. Covington was detained by store security until police arrived.

Man charged with DUI
A man was charged with  aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly leaving the scene of a property damage accident at 9 p.m. Oct. 4.

Police received a report that a car driven by Kire Kochankovski, 37, of Downers Grove struck a concrete barrier at the vacant BP Amoco gas station, 31st Street and Wolf Road.

Police found Kochankovski’s car on Canterbury Street just east of Wolf Road.

He was also charged leaving the scene of an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle.
