Aurora, IL -

After months of protests, lawsuits and a round-the-clock prayer vigil staged by anti-abortionists, the controversial Planned Parenthood in Aurora opened its doors Tuesday morning.

The opening of the women’s reproductive health care clinic, located at 3051 E. New York St., was originally scheduled for Sept. 18, but was put on hold pending the results of an investigation by Kane County State’s Attorney John Barsanti into how Planned Parenthood obtained its occupancy permit.

The $7.5 million, 22,000-square-foot clinic will be the closest abortion-provider for residents of Marengo, Union and Huntley.

The city of Aurora hired the State’s Attorney to conduct an independent investigation after being pressured by protesters and community members. Planned Parenthood had been under fire for using a decoy name, Gemini Office Development LLC, and failing to reveal the organization’s true identity when it applied for a permit to build last summer.

On Monday the State’s Attorney announced Planned Parenthood committed no criminal action when applying for an occupancy permit in Aurora, and city officials said the women’s clinic would be allowed to open its doors within the next 24 hours.

Mayor Tom Weisner said while Planned Parenthood was “less than forthcoming,” the investigation cleared the clinic of any legal wrongdoing and there was no legal reason to prevent it from opening.

“There’s not a sufficient reason to deny an occupancy permit to Planned Parenthood,” Weisner said. “We’re going to move forward with granting them the permit.”

Eric Scheidler, spokesman for the Pro-Life Action League, the organization that has been leading protests against the clinic, said pro-life activists would remain active and hold prayer vigils in opposition to Planned Parenthood.

“We will continue to protest abortion in the city of Aurora, and we will continue to pray at the facility,” Scheidler said.

Weisner said he understood the clinic’s opening was an emotional issue, but the city was simply doing its job by following the law.

“All government can do is try to treat people fairly, and we’re going to continue to try to be fair and follow the law,” Weisner said.

Although issues surrounding the clinic’s opening had been discussed during recent City Council meetings, the next meeting’s agenda did not include any topics related to Planned Parenthood, said Carie Anne Ergo, spokeswoman for Mayor Weisner.

Planned Parenthood officials called the city’s decision to grant the organization an occupancy permit a victory for women and families of Aurora.

A large pink banner with words “This Center is Now Open” was displayed near the clinic Tuesday.
