Huntley, IL -

The Marengo High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering team brought home a second-place trophy from the McHenry Community College regional competition.

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering, and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics. Each test production team produces three tests of increasing levels of difficulty: regional, sectional and state finals. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team (when their school fields a team).

The fourteen outstanding students who made up this team will advance to the North Chicago sectional competition Friday, March 9, at Vernon Hills High School. Individual awards in the February competition went to Liz Boyer, first in chemistry and physics; Alan Yanahan, third in physics; and Kevin Severs, third in chemistry.
