The Internal Revenue Service said Thursday that it's looking for nearly 3,600 taxpayers in Illinois who are due refund checks worth more than $3.6 million. The checks were returned to the IRS by the post office as undeliverable.

Hundreds of these taxpayers reside in the western suburbs. Click here to see if you're on the list.

In Illinois, the average undeliverable refund is $1,023, said Sue Hales, an IRS spokeswoman. By providing an updated address to the IRS, taxpayers can have their checks reissued.

Nationwide, more than 107,000 refunds totaling $123.5 million were returned to the IRS. Undeliverable checks average $1,148 this year, compared with $990 last year. Some taxpayers are due more than one check.

Taxpayers can find out if they are due a tax refund by visiting www.irs.gov and clicking on “Where’s My Refund.”
This feature allows taxpayers to get the status of their refund check and, in some cases, get instructions to resolve delivery problems.

Taxpayers can also check on the status of their refund by calling (800) 829-1954. People checking on a refund by phone will be given instructions on how to update their address.

After moving, taxpayers can ensure that the IRS has their correct address by filing Form 8822, which is available at www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
