Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a plane piloted by a La Grange man, carrying his uncle, from Hinsdale, to crash into a northern Wisconsin River on Thursday.

Kevin McCabe, 26, of La Grange, and Pierce McCabe, 68, of Hinsdale, were killed in the crash, according to the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office. The men took off from the Aurora Municipal Airport, and were headed to the Lakeland Airport in Arbor Vitae.

At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration in Minneapolis reported an overdue aircraft.

After several failed attempts to locate the plane, ground crews were dispatched to the area in which the plane was scheduled to make its approach to the airport. Civil Air Patrol teams located a radio signal from the aircraft, and at about 11:19 a.m., search teams found the wreckage in the Trout River.

After approaching the plane by boat, search and rescue teams determined both the pilot and occupant of the aircraft had died after being ejected. Officials have not determined what caused the crash, and an investigation continues.
