Hinsdale, IL -

Summer is a time to enjoy nice weather and relax with family and friends. But it is also the scam season, according to Hinsdale police.

Police said a man without identification attempted to enter a home in the 700 block of Justina Street at about 1 p.m. June 26, claiming he had to read the water meter. Police Detective Chuck Leuver said the resident told the man to leave, which he did after she put up a fuss.

“Usually, if they’re getting too much resistance and are asked too many questions and see they’re not gaining the trust they need, they’ll get out of there,” Leuver said.

The Hinsdale Police Department is cautioning residents about Gypsy groups, who often target the elderly and disabled. Police said in Hinsdale, Gypsies have been known to pose as water department employees, tree contractors from Commonwealh Edison as well as roofers and masons. Police said they speak in a language which is often mistaken for Spanish but is actually Romani.

After luring the victim out of his or her home, police said the Gypsy uses a radio and tells the others it is clear to go in the house. Cohorts then enter the home, taking cash, jewelry and other valuables before contacting the decoy to know the job is finished, according to police. The decoy then ends the conversation with the homeowner and leaves before the victim realizes what has taken place, police said.

Leuver said two years ago, Gypsies conducted a sealcoating scam, promising to reseal driveways for a certain amount and then asking for double the amount when finished. In that case, police were able to arrest the crew and get restitution.

Leuver said it is important for residents to ask for identification from anyone who comes to the door and to never leave the house. If residents have any questions about a person’s validity, they should call the company they say they are from.
