Western suburbs, IL -

La Grange-based Southwest Suburban Center on Aging will host its annual luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at La Grange Country Club. Melissa Isaacson, Chicago Tribune feature writer and sports columnist, will give the keynote address.

Isaacson is the author of the highly-acclaimed Chicago Tribune Magazine feature “Something’s not right with Mom…and now, Dad,” which appeared in January. The piece chronicles her family’s struggle to deal with her parents’ simultaneous diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease. She will discuss their methods of coping and the resources they found helpful.

Isaacson joined the Tribune 18 years ago after working for Florida Today, USA Today and the Orlando Sentinel. At the Tribune, she was the beat reporter for the Chicago Bulls during their first championship run from 1991 to 1995 and the Bears from 1996 to 2003. She has covered nearly every major sporting event including the World Series, Super Bowl, Wimbledon, the British Open, the U.S. Open, and the Summer and Winter Olympics. This summer Isaacson was in Beijing reporting on the Summer Olympics. She also is the author of multiple books. In addition to numerous national honors, Isaacson received the Tribune’s prestigious Beck Award for Outstanding Performance.

Highlights of the annual luncheon event will be the recognition of community service honorees Lawrence Kinports of La Grange and Fred Ploegman of Westchester.

To make reservations for the event, call Niki Chibucos, director of development and community relations, at (708) 354-1323, ext. 26. Tickets are $30.
