Film and television star Marlee Matlin will sign copies of her book “I’ll Scream Later” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Borders Books and Music, 1500 16th. St., Oak Brook.

Matlin’s show business break came as the deaf pupil turned custodian in “Children of a Lesser God.” Today, she remains the youngest woman ever to win a Best Actress Oscar. Last season, she did an inspirational stint on “Dancing with the Stars.”

In “I’ll Scream Later,” Matlin delves into how being thrust into the spotlight and becoming a role model for deaf and hard-of-hearing people were tempered by her own battles with addiction and abuse. Beginning with her loss of hearing at 18 months, she takes readers on a frank and touching journey through her life, with the highs and lows of Hollywood and the challenges of being deaf in a hearing world.

Raised with the belief that she could do absolutely anything she put her mind to, Matlin defied critics who proclaimed her career, as she humorously stated, “DOA — Deaf On Arrival.” Her story is described as an inspiration and a lesson in overcoming adversity and following your dreams.
