In literally a matter of seconds, Downers Grove North went from reeling to rolling Friday in its 19-7 win over Proviso West.
With the visiting Panthers clinging to a 7-6 lead after twice repelling Trojan drives across midfield, an interception by Downers North junior Stephen Banda gave the hosts the ball again at the Proviso 35-yard-line with 37 seconds left in the third quarter.
Big things followed quickly. Jermal Jones’ 35-yard touchdown run on the next play from scrimmage put the Trojans (3-2, 2-0 in the WSS) up 12-7, and after a fumbled ensuing kickoff by the Panthers (2-3, 0-3) was recovered by Michael Valdez, Dan Sheppard scored on a 1-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter to quickly turn a frustrating night into a second straight win.
Proviso West had taken a 7-0 lead with 2:50 left in the first quarter on an acrobatic 2-yard touchdown reception by Kyle Prater on a pass from Teddy Sloan. A 19-yard Sloan completion on third down and 18 set up the score.
Downers North had a methodical 10 play, 45-yard drive to pull within 7-6 midway through the second quarter. Sheppard’s 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down on goal capped the drive, which featured a 21-yard Sheppard pass to Joe Claver.
After the Trojans’ 19 unanswered points, Proviso West nicely drove to the Downers North 1-yard-line on a series of Sloan completions. But the Panthers turned the ball over on downs with 54.1 seconds left.
