Riverside Police are stepping up their DUI enforcement on St. Patrick’s Day, Wednesday, March 17.
In a press release, Police Chief Tom Weitzel said impaired driving can cause dangerous situations on the road.
“Too often, St. Patrick’s Day can be a deadly and dangerous time on our roads because of impaired driving,” Weitzel said. “That is why on March 17th officers will be out to catch and arrest anyone who is driving while impaired.”
According to statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 137 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Thirty-seven percent of those deaths involved an impaired driver. The NHTSA defines the St. Patrick’s Day holiday from 6 p.m. March 16 to 6:59 a.m. March 18.
Weitzel wanted to remind residents to designate a driver if they plan on drinking alcohol during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations this year.
