Berwyn, IL -

Would-be customers were driving toward the parking lot of the Egg Store Produce Market in Cermak Plaza in Berwyn  Thursday morning but first stopped and stared at the grocer’s windows covered with new signs: “Familia Foods,” “Carniceria Y Frutera,” “Gran Apertura,” and “Coming soon.”

Several shoppers said they assumed the Egg Store was closing as they saw fewer workers and the empty shelves not being replenished, but they weren’t able to confirm it until they tried to shop there Thursday.

One customer, Al, who lives down the street in Berwyn, said he saw a sign that indicated remodeling.

“But it didn’t say it was changing stores; I only found out now. I’m going to kind of miss the Egg Store; people were really nice there,” he said, and referring to the grocer as his “corner store” where he shopped almost daily and once briefly worked as a teen.

An employee at the store’s corporate office said the company sold the Berwyn store and closed its doors Friday. The company may do the same with its Oak Lawn location. Two locations remain in Chicago, at 3008 S Halsted St. and 6190 S. Archer Ave.
