Glen Ellyn Park District staff learned on Jan. 16 that the roof on the new Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center — which has yet to open — has a leak.
Ice collecting in the south-west corner of the building expanded two pieces of metal and allowed water to breach the roof and leak into the building.
Superintendent of Parks Dave Scarmardo told park board commissioners at the Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners meeting, Jan. 19 , that water made its way to the new wooden gym floor. District staff are blasting the wood with high-powered fans in hopes that it will dry before opening day.
Scarmardo told board members the company that installed the floors believes there is a 50 percent chance no permanent damage will occur.
Scarmardo said district staff have spoken with Korellis Roofing, the company that installed the roof. "(They are) not happy but (they are) going to pay for the replacement of the wood floor," Scarmardo said.
The board gave Scarmardo the authority to withhold $337,147 from six companies until several construction stage problems are resolved. In connection with the leaky roof, Scarmardo will withhold money from Korellis Roofing, the steel construction company T.A. Bowman, and project manager PBS.
Scarmardo will also withhold money from the companies Manusos and Entre Prises USA for back charging issues. Money is being withheld from Sportscon until that company provides a net to protect spectators during soccer games.
Commissioner William Dallman asked Scarmardo what happens if the district finds more problems with the building. "It will be a one-year warranty when the keys are handed over to us," Scarmardo said.
Dallman said he had taken a tour of the facility and saw the damage. "It's clearly going to be a home court advantage for whatever team is playing for that (damaged) side," he said.
