BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -

Lovie Smith describes Chicago’s “dead even” quarterback competition as “between Rex and Kyle, or Kyle and Rex. However you want to say it.”

The one way the Bears coach wouldn’t say it was “Brett Favre.”

“We will always try to improve our ballclub, any time at any position, but that has not been a part of what we are talking about at all,” Smith said Tuesday when the Bears reported to training camp in Bourbonnais.

“Brett Favre is one of the all-time great players to play our game. I assume he will play for the Packers this year. If not there, I assume for somebody else. I don’t know who that is.”

Smith also said he doesn’t yet know who will start at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, left tackle or left guard for the Bears.

“That’s what makes sports better than anything else, everybody gets a chance to compete,” running back and former NIU star Garrett Wolfe said.
