Going to public library proves a true love story
Glen Ellyn Public Library, I love you. Your structure is light and interesting, spaces wide, with nooks to occupy, and you’re open till 9.
You have what I need, know what I need. And that, of course, is information. Books, movies, free Wi-Fi. Just when I thought I knew all there was to know about you, you give more.
But you’re much more than that. You accept me the way I am.
I show up with a stack of CDs, movies, and books and you say, “Is that all? How can I give you more, Joe? How?” And I apologize, “I feel like I’m using too much, that I’ve checked out a stack of CDs from every public library in the LINK system,” and you say, “Joe, that’s what I’m here for, to serve you. Whatever book, movie, or CD your heart desires provided it’s in the LINK system.”
Then you say, “but if it’s not in the LINK system, Joe, just ask for it, and we’ll do everything in our power to get it, Joe. And why? Joe, because though we don’t say it directly, we say it everything we do, we love you Joe. We want to make you happy in any conventional way a public library can make a man such as you happy.”
I hope I never move from Glen Ellyn because it would take me away from you, and I don’t think my heart could take the separation.
Joe Schulenberg, Glen Ellyn
