Glen Ellyn, IL -

Power was restored to about 300 Glen Ellyn customers Wednesday morning, a day after a downed powerline ignited an underground gasline.

Five Glen Ellyn buildings near Roosevelt Road were evacuated Tuesday afternoon in the blaze at at 17 Sunset Ave., northwest of the Roosevelt Road and Main Street intersection.

Emergency officials responded at about 4:30 p.m. to the report of a downed powerline. When fire officials arrived, they saw the live wire arcing on the driveway.

"Within minutes the powerline penetrated the driveway and ignited an undergound gasline," a news release from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. stated.

The fire was contained to the driveway without damaging nearby structures, and no one was injured. As a precaution, officials evacuated five nearby buildings, and they remained empty Tuesday night.

That night Nicor gas officials were digging to the gasline to shut it off so Com Ed could secure the powerline and restore power to a segment of Roosevelt Road. A spokesman for the electric company said that by Wednesday morning power had been restored to all customers.
