Condos destroyed by early morning fire

Royal Glen Condominiums, 1188 Royal Glen Drive in Glen Ellyn, was evacuated at approximately 3 a.m. this morning due to a structure fire.

The fire caused major damage but there were no injuries reported. The Red Cross has been called to assist and the residents were relocated to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glen Ellyn.

The fire has been put out, but firemen were still on the scene around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Flames could be seen through the windows of the top floor of the three-story, multi-family building when the Glen Ellyn Fire Department arrived. They immediately upgraded to multiple alarms fire, bringing over 20 neighboring fire departments to assist. Fire departments came from Addison, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glenside, Hinsdale, Itasca, Lisle-Woodridge, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oak Brook Terrace, Villa Park, Westchester, West Chicago, Wheaton, Winfield and York Center to help extinguish the fire.
