CHICAGO -

Two area residents face felony charges in connection with a car chase with Chicago police that closed the westbound Eisenhower expressway for several hours Friday.
Matthew Ristau, 31, of 25 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn, and Thomas Hogueisson, 53, of 26W105 W. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton, were still in custody this afternoon.

The chase began at 1:45 p.m. Friday after police say Ristau and Hogueisson purchased four bags of heroin near West Polk Street and South Lavergne Avenue in Chicago. Uniformed police, who were driving unmarked cars, stopped Ristau and approached his car, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

One officer reached into Ristau’s car to turn off the engine, at which point Ristau accelerated, dragging the officer a short distance, Conklin said.

Police pursued in a chase that ultimately traveled the wrong way down Polk before heading the wrong way onto the Eisenhower, with Ristau allegedly traveling east in the westbound lane.

He collided with a police car, and as police approached his stopped car, Ristau accelerated toward them, prompting police to open fire, Conklin said. Hogueisson was shot in the torso, and eventually transported to Stroger Hospital.

Ristau was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer and one count of attempted aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated fleeing, aggravated driving under the influence and possession of heroin. Conklin said Ristau tested positive for opiates and cocaine. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
Hogueisson was charged with felony possession of heroin and is being held on $25,000 bond. Both are due back in Cook County Circuit court on Friday.

Conklin said Ristau, who has three prior drug convictions, did not have a drivers license at the time of his arrest.
