A Wheaton man who last week poured his heart out over an abandoned newborn found near his home was stabbed to death Friday night.
Michael Scalzo, 40, was found near his apartment on the 800 block of Crescent Boulevard with multiple stab wounds to the chest. He was taken to Central DuPage Hospital where he was pronounced dead during surgery at 12:30 a.m.
Michael Delaney, 45, 720 Crescent Blvd., Wheaton, was arrested and charged Sunday with first-degree murder.
Nine witnesses were identified and interviewed at the scene, and at least some identified Delaney as the offender, according to Wheaton police reports.
The stabbing took place in the parking lot of 720 Crescent Blvd., and the alleged murder weapon was found nearby. Scalzo was stabbed six times during the attack, according to a forensics autopsy.
A week before his death, Scalzo showed empathy after an abandoned newborn baby was found just a few steps from his home in the early morning hours.
He said he was awoken June 12 by emergency vehicles responding to the discovered child. Days later, a 24-year-old woman was arrested and charged with endangering the life or health of a child, whom police say she gave birth to that morning.
“If anything good can come out of this, at least the baby is going to survive,” Scalzo said to a reporter hours after the baby was recovered.
