Glen Ellyn, IL -

Residents who are decrying a proposed construction project at Ackerman Park will once again try to sway leaders’ opinions at the Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees meeting Monday, May 12.

The proposed plan, which has been approved by the Village Board and the Glen Ellyn Park District, would clear about 3 acres of trees for two soccer fields, one of which would serve as a dry detention pond for storm water runoff. The completion of the project would free up a nearby plot of land, the sale of which would cover the costs of construction, village officials said.

Melissa Creech, a leader among the group since she began informing neighbors of the project this spring, said in an e-mail that opponents will be at this week’s board meeting “to put pressure” on leaders.

The group also has started an online petition, which as of 1:30 p.m. Monday had 111 signatures.

The opposition to the construction is relatively new — manifesting this spring, six years after the village began developing the project and just months before the proposed start of work in June.

Since March, Creech and dozens of other residents have become a regular fixture at Village Board and Park District meetings. Much of the opposition is in response to plans to cut more than 300 trees to make way for the soccer fields.

During public comment periods at the meetings, residents’ concerns have been peppered with personal anecdotes, reflections on Glen Ellyn history and impending pathos over the loss of the 300-some trees.
