The Glenbard South High School community is mourning the loss of alumnus Marine Lance Cpl. Kevin E. Oratowski, who died Wednesday in Afghanistan.

The 23-year-old Wheaton resident died Aug. 18 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. Oratowski was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road, in Wheaton. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, 41 N. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

A news release issued by Glenbard South said the 2005 graduate was a valued member of the community and very active at the local Park District. According to the school, one of his high school jobs was at a local retirement home, and he enjoyed helping others.

"Kevin's service to our nation honors our community and our school," the release said. "His sacrifice and that of his family are potent reminders of the price so many have paid in defense of our liberty."
