WWS to host concerto


Wheaton Warrenville South High School will host a concerto concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the school’s auditorium at 1920 S. Wiesbrook Road, Wheaton.

The concert is free and open to the public. The evening’s performance combines the talents of orchestra students from both Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South High Schools.

The following student soloists will be featured: Peter Albrecht, senior violinist from Wheaton North, performing the 1st movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto; Suchan Kim, senior violinist from Wheaton Warrenville South, performing the 1st movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto; A.J. Nilles, senior violist from Wheaton Warrenville South, performing Rhapsodie from Bloch’s Suite Hebraique; David Schumm, senior double bass player from Wheaton Warrenville South, performing the 1st movement of Dittersdorf’s Bass Concerto in E Major; and Mandy Vallaro, senior horn player from Wheaton Warrenville South, performing the 1st movement of Franz Strauss’s Horn Concerto, Op. 8.


WNHS to host musical

Wheaton North High School will present its spring musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, to Saturday, March 10, in the school’s auditorium at 701 W. Thomas Road, Wheaton. Tickets cost $4 for students and $6 for adults. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (630) 784-7316.


Math Team earns awards

The Falcon Math Team of Wheaton North High School participated in the DuPage Valley Conference Math Meet at Wheaton Warrenville South High School.

The junior-senior team of Ayesha Athar and Greg Gauthier placed second in the event. The Falcon Algebra II Team placed third, led by the efforts of Sam Krc and Jeff Sommars, who were named all conference. Also contributing in the event were Ayesha Athar, Meredith Chase, Collin Christensen and Colin Gierzynski.

Top scoring Falcons in other written competitions were April Jenkins (algebra I), Emily Lagatolla and Mitch Moore (geometry) and Rachel Marro (pre-calculus).

The collective effort of another junior-senior team resulted in a third place finish. Falcon participants were Meredith Chase, Nadia Danilovich, Greg Gauthier, Sam Krc, Rachel Marro, Brian Schlick, Sayam Uddin and Dana Wasserman.

Wheaton North was also one of the three winning teams in the popular “Candy Bar” round in which entire teams competed for sweets.

Additional contributors to the team effort were freshmen Jodi Heidorn, Setu Patel and Adam Sun; sophomores Brian Salat, Michael Perovarovic and Melissa Wiener; and juniors Ann Fefferman and Reshma Joshi.

The Falcons are coached by Linda Blanco and Marina Mulford. The DVC Math Meet is sponsored by the math department chairmen of the DuPage Valley Conference. Wheaton North is represented by J.T. Johns.


College to host symposium

The Human Needs and Global Resources Department at Wheaton College will present its second annual symposium Friday Feb. 23 and Saturday Feb. 24. The symposium’s plenary address will be given by Jim De Vries, senior vice president of programs at Heifer International, and is titled “The Heart of the Matter: Holistic Values-Based Community Development.” This free lecture will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in Coray Auditorium, 421 N. Chase St., Wheaton. The two-day symposium will feature workshops and interactive conversations. Local students honored

Christina Buck and James Hafer, both of Wheaton, were named to the dean’s list for the 2006 fall semester at Millikin University in Decatur. To be eligible, students must complete at least 12 graded credits during the semester and earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Daniel Spychala of Glen Ellyn, a student in the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall quarter of the 2006-07 academic year. Students on the dean’s list have attained a GPA of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Joy De Witt of Glen Ellyn, a senior architecture major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will take part in a study-abroad program in Germany. Starting March 15, De Witt will study at the University of Hannover for 4-1/2 months. De Witt, the daughter of James and Nancy De Witt, graduated from Glenbard West High School.

Each year, more than 700 UNL students participate in the university’s study-abroad programs in more than 50 countries.
