Winfield, IL -

Visitors can smell pumpkin pie baking in the wood-burning stove and discover other tasty fall recipes at Kline Creek Farm in Winfield during “Pumpkins and Squashes” with demonstrations at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The demonstrations will teach about the different varieties of pumpkins and squashes, and show off pumpkin pies, pumpkin fritters and squash biscuits baking in the farm’s wood-burning stove.

Visitors can see how 1890s farm families preserved and properly stored these staple foods, whose thick, hard rinds could keep them fresh for months. They can also discover the history of pumpkin and squash dishes, find out how the first pumpkin pie was made and take home recipes for modern kitchens.

Reservations are not needed to attend this free program. Kline Creek Farm, an 1890s living-history farm, is owned and operated by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays and is on County Farm Road, one-half mile south of North Avenue.

For information on programs and events, call the farm at (630) 876-5900. For information on volunteer opportunities, call (630) 933-7681.
