Glendale Heights, IL -

Glendale Heights will celebrate the fall harvest season with scarecrows, a craft fair and lots of chili.

The village’s Harvest Fest will be from 10 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at Heritage Park, Windy Point Drive and Paul Avenue.

During the festival, the village will also hold its chili cook-off, with teams vying to try to make the best chili, and knock off the defending champion Glendale Heights Police Department.

Registration deadline for teams to enter the cook-off was Oct. 5.

Visitors will enjoy free musical entertainment along with hay rides, a craft fair, marionette puppet shows and scarecrows scattered throughout the grounds, said Allana Zeiss, chairperson of the village’s Special Events Commission.

During the event, members of the Special Events Commission will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, pop and water, and area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will sell pumpkins, taffy apples and cider. A bake sale will also be held by the Glendale Heights Junior Woman’s Club, Zeiss said.

In conjunction with the festival, a senior citizens fishing derby will be from 10 a.m. to noon, and a bean bag toss tournament will begin at noon, Zeiss said.

“We are really excited about the festival this year, and the weather is expected to be nice,” she added.

The event she is most looking forward to is the chili cook-off, she said.

Several teams will be vying for bragging rights of who makes the best chili in the village.

Festivalgoers will be able to sample all the recipes, and voting will be done in several categories, including the people’s choice award, voted on by residents at the festival. Prizes will also be awarded for the event.

Other events include a salsa-making contest and a chili-pepper eating contest.
