St. Charles City Council voted to discontinue the Spring Clean Up program at Monday night’s meeting.
The city believes 20 to 30 percent of St. Charles residents were using the program, but said there has been evidence of people abusing the program by accumulating garbage throughout the year and putting it out as items for Spring Clean Up and having friends, neighbors and family bring items to the city for disposal.
Beth Mund, the city’s community and public affairs division manager, said in a press release that scrapping the program will save over $120,000. The city has listed many alternative services at www.stcharlesil.gov.
