n the largest criminal drug conspiracy operation brought down by the Chicago Police Department, a St. Charles resident, the alleged "Four Corner Hustlers" boss, was arrested on a charge of felony cannabis violation.

"Shakey" Shawn Betts, 41,  who served as the enforcement arm of the organization, which was formed in the 1990s, was arrested at his residence in the 1500 block of Indiana Street in St. Charles Wednesday, according to Chicago and St. Charles police. Four St. Charles police officers helped Chicago police bring Betts into custody.

"We welcome the opportunity to work with other law enforcement officers and other agencies in the performance of their duties, especially when it concerns convicted felons and gang members,” St. Charles police spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

During the investigation, dubbed Operation Capitol Hill, more than 20,000 calls between gang leaders, drug sellers and distributors were intercepted, and multiple surveillance operations were conducted throughout the west side of the city. Members of the investigation made more than 100 purchases of illegal narcotics, according to police.

The investigation was launched in 2004, said Chicago Police Organized Crime Chief Frank Limon in a release. Search warrants were conducted in several western suburbs, including St. Charles, Villa Park, Wheaton, Western Springs and Aurora.

"Anytime we can go after the gang hierarchy, we are dismantling the root cause of violence and organized crime at the highest levels,” he said.

Officers charged 75 members of the gang, known as the Body Snatchers, and arrested 55 individuals Wednesday, according to police. Betts was a priority target.

During the investigation, police recovered about 300 grams of heroin, 450 grams of crack cocaine, 140 tablets of ecstasy and more than 1,000 grams of cannabis.  Eight vehicles and 19 firearms were seized.
