Garfield Farm Museum will offer a hike on the prairie at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, led by museum biologist Jerome Johnson and the museum’s new prairie restorationist, John Engstrom, whose addition will allow for a concentrated effort of restoration year round.
For more than 20 of its 31 years, Garfield Farm Museum has been restoring the remnant prairie and oak savanna. The hike will feature both the plants in bloom, and the history of the land. Recent climate history, the success rate of different management techniques and future restoration hopes will be discussed. Hand pollination has been used, for example, to save such rarities as the eastern prairie fringed orchid.
A $6 donation is requested for the two-hour hike. Appropriate shoes, hats and mosquito repellent are recommended. Reservations may be made by calling (630) 584-8485 or e-mailing info@garfieldfarm.org.
The 1840s working farm museum is five miles west of Geneva, off Route 38 on Garfield Road.
