Going into Park National Bank in Geneva has gotten a little hairy lately.
For the past several Mondays, bank customers looking to deposit a check or open an account have passed by several furry felines left homeless after the devastating Iowa floods this summer.
Mary Ellen Thielemann, vice president at Park National, learned about the cats through her volunteer work at the Feline Wellness Center in Forest Park. She got permission from the bank to host adoption events and bring a few of the cats in the past several Mondays.
“They love the attention,” Thielemann said of the orphaned cats. “Being in a cage in a shelter is no fun at all.
“So to be out and to be held and talked to and have someone pay attention is really great for them,” she said.
Already, she has been able to place one cat through the adoption event. The final event will be Monday at the bank.

Some patrons do a double-take when they see the cats, Thielemann said.
“There are signs posted so people know prior to entering, but if they’re preoccupied and don’t see them, they come in and see the cages and ask, ‘What’s going on?’” she said.
Each animal is $55, which helps to defray veterinary and shelter costs.
