Kane County State’s Attorney John Barsanti has been appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as a circuit judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit.
The appointment, effective Dec. 1 and running through Dec. 3, 2012, is filling the vacancy left by Circuit Judge Michael J. Colwell. Colwell is retiring this year. Barsanti would have to run for election if he wanted to remain circuit judge past 2012.
Barsanti, 58, who joined the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant state’s attorney in 1979, has been the state’s attorney in Kane County for six years.
Barsanti is a native of Cicero and a 1974 graduate of Carroll College in Waukesha, WI and a 1977 graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law. He has practiced as an attorney since 1977.
It is unknown at this time where Barsanti will be seated once he takes his oath as a judge, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
The Kane County board will appoint an interim state’s attorney to serve the duration of Barsanti’s term, which expires Nov. 30, 2012.
The state’s attorneys office said in a press release that board Chairman Karen McConnaughay said she plans to create a panel of members of the judicial and legal community to identify and interview candidates. She said the board would act with the advice and consent of that panel.
Members of the panel are expected to be announced next week. It is not known when a replacement will be announced, but McConnaughay said that a deadline has not been set.
Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Illinois.
