Tanya Taylor’s game winning goal in the 101st minute gave the Orange County Waves the victory over the Chicago Red Stars in Sunday’s Women’s Premier Soccer League championship game.
It was only the Red Stars’ second loss of the season and one that was filled with drama from start to finish. With a goal in the 43rd minute, Orange County appeared to be on their way to the championship in regulation. But a goal by Red Stars midfielder Julie Ewing scored a dramatic game-tying goal in the 88th minute.
The goal pushed the game into two 15-minute overtime periods before Taylor, who was named the game’s MVP, got behind the Red Stars defense and scored the eventual game-winner.
“Tanya is a handful for anybody. She can just turn it on and just beat you,” said Orange County head coach Abner Rogers. “The timing of (the goal) was great, and she made a great run. She was calm with her finish. It was a great goal.”
The Red Stars’ Amanda Cinalli had a shot at the goal in stoppage time of OT that would have tied the game again but it went just wide left.
“We definitely missed three or four good chances that we don’t usually miss, but we had to push numbers forward. They were able to get counters on us and they had some chances to put the game away, too,” said Red Stars coach Rory Dames.
Despite the loss, the Red Stars first season in the Women’s Premier League was very successful with the team going 11-2-0, including the postseason.
“Our roster was comprised of predominantly players from the Chicago area, so to pull that much talent from the area and compete with Orange County’s players speaks volumes,” Dames said. “I’m proud of this group.”
