Geneva, IL -

Getting in trouble and being sent to the principal’s office is so out this season.

Tom Rogers, the new principal of Geneva High School, said there are three deans who deal with bad behavior now.

Rogers grew up in Geneva and attended Geneva High School. He taught at the Geneva Middle School for five years, then spent three years as the athletic director of GHS and the past eight years as vice principal. As of July 1 Rogers entered his 17th year in the school district as the principal of GHS.

Q: What challenges do you foresee as principal?
A: The physical size of the school will be a challenge. We are overcrowded here. An architectural firm has been brought in to help with plans for the expansion. I see this happening within the next five years. We are planning for more growth in the future and will need the space to meet the demands of the students and faculty.

Q: How has GHS changed since you were a student there?

By the numbers

17 years Rogers has been with the Geneva School District
5 years He taught at Geneva Middle School
132 Number of students in his Geneva graduating class
500 Number of students in this year’s  freshman class

A: Obviously the size has changed. When I graduated there were 132 students in my class. This year there are over 500 in the entering freshman class alone. The entire population of Geneva has grown. We welcome this change and look forward to greeting all the new students. New faculty as well has come on board.

Q: What are your plans as the new principal?
A: I don’t have any earth-shattering changes to announce at this point. I am very fortunate to follow in Greg Fantozzi’s footsteps. I can only hope to continue to lead in such a successful fashion as he did.

Q: What exactly does a principal do on summer break?
A: The first three to four weeks of summer we are wrapping up the completed school year. The report cards need to be finalized and mailed. Then we go right into the registration packets for the new year. There are also teacher’s class assignments, freshman orientation, etc. I also make sure the first day of school will run smoothly for everyone.

Q: How much does it cost to register a student at GHS?
A: That really depends on which courses the students are taking. There is a $105 registration fee. If they are taking driver’s education, photography or participating in athletics there are more fees. This can be an expensive process, even though we are on par with other schools in the area. We do feel strongly the experience students receive for the fees are worth the cost. With the population growing, we do see an increase of people who need assistance with the registration fees. We will set up a payment program or waive the fees altogether.
