The Berwyn Park District recently received the initial $250,000 of a $1 million dollar grant from the Illinois Department of Community and Economic Opportunity.
According to a statement from park district officials, the majority of the money will be used to improve drainage at Proksa Park, which frequently causes flooding in the park and in the surrounding area.
The money also will be used for a new dog park at Karban Park, the replacement of playground equipment at Hessler, Sunshine and Smirz Park, as well as updates and repairs to the Liberty Cultural Center.
A new concession stand also will be built in Proksa Park with the grant money.
Much of that funding, along with a total of more than $5 million in grants throughout Berwyn, were jeopardized by a lawsuit that challenged the legality of a $32 billion tax bill that funded the grants. That case was settled by the Illinois Supreme Court in recent months, which ruled that the grants could move forward.
