Rose Alagna had just completed treatment for breast cancer when she saw a sign for the inaugural Berwyn-Cicero Relay for Life in 1997.
“I went there to see what it was about, and I just kind of got hooked,” Alagna said.
Thirteen years later, the cancer is still in remission, and Alagna has remained a vital part of Relay for Life. She started as a team member, then became a team leader and eventually joined the committee. She is now in her second year as the event chair for the relay, which will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Morton College in Cicero.
“Being at the relay gives you a connection to other people who are going through the same stuff you’re going through,” Alagna said. “You feel that camaraderie, and it just gives you some strength every year.”
At times, she still recalls the fear and anger over her diagnosis and the possibility that remission won’t be permanent. But she said she also draws strength from some lessons learned.
“It’s always in the back of your mind that it can come back, but I think it’s changed my life in positive ways also,” Alagna said. “I don’t get as upset about things, I don’t sweat the small stuff.”
Alagna also participates in the event in honor of her mother, who lost a battle with lung cancer three years ago.
The relay’s traditional luminary ceremony to honor those who have battled cancer is always the most difficult time for Alagna.
“Sometimes I don’t want to think about it and I just want to move on with my life,” Alagna said. “But other times it just gives me strength to see the other people (at the relay).”
Notable
This year’s Relay for Life will include additional events open to the community including a car show, vendors such as Avon and Mary Kay, and individual teams will sell items to raise money. “It’s a really nice atmosphere event to just come and hang out,” Alagna said.
& quotable
“I look at things differently now. I try to really enjoy my life and the people around me and try to savor everything.”
Philosophy
“Sing as if no one is listening. Dance as if no one is watching. Live each day as if it were your last,” ends each of Alagna’s e-mails.
