There wasn’t much drama left to unfold on Saturday as the Hinsdale Central and York boys tennis teams played what equated to an abbreviated West Suburban Silver meet, along with a short practice.
Sectional host Hinsdale Central and the Dukes reserved all eight positions for the IHSA state finals during the first three rounds on Friday. That left just the team’s combined 12 players to compete on Saturday.
The superior Red Devils won all four semifinal matchups with the Dukes to finish first and second at both singles and both doubles positions. The Dukes occupied the final two spots at both singles and doubles.
“It was like a dual meet and then just like an intersquad practice,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “We were just excited to get everyone through. They played great to get there.”
After losing to the Red Devils in the semifinals, York singles players Chris Vargo and Mark Nosek were third and fourth, respectively, while the doubles teams of Mike Scinto and Jack Parr and Nate Ahlgrim and Chris Delgado also went 3-4.
This will be the fourth trip to state for Vargo and the third in three tries for Nosek. And neither had an easy road to state.
Vargo opened the sectional with a 6-1, 6-0 win and then had to hold off Timothy Christian’s Justin Groenewald 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 in the quarterfinals to secure his spot at state. Vargo got the best of Nosek in their third-place match 6-4, 6-3.
For Nosek, his trip to state was even a little more difficult. He battled past Ryan Hoff of Timothy Christian 7-5, 6-4 and then was pushed hard in a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Montini’s Oliver James in the quarterfinals.
“Chris and Mark have been there before,” Heimann said. “They are battle tested and that experience really helped them out. But they both had to dig deep to pull it out.”
On the doubles side, this is the first trip to state for all four Duke players.
Parr and Scinto’s closest match came against their teammates as they beat Ahlgrim and Delgado 7-6, 6-4. The third-place duo won 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and then beat TC’s Ryan Degroot and Tyler VanderBurg 6-3, 6-4 to qualify for state.
Ahlgrim and Delgado won 6-2, 6-3 over Montini’s John Duch and Pat Slattery and then beat TC’s Will Rolefs and Tom Griffin 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 in quarterfinals to secure their state position.
The state meet started Thursday and Heimann said the team was ready for whatever might be in store.
“They’ve been working hard all week,” Heimann said. “We are ready for a long day of tennis, and it can be a full day. Hopefully we can stretch it as long as we can.”
In the team standings, Hinsdale Central won the sectional title with 28 points. York followed with 18 and Glenbard East and Timothy Christian each had six points.
Montini’s Jordan Werner won 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in his first match but lost in the quarterfinals, while James reached the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Glenbard East’s Jake Ward won 6-3, 6-1 in his first match but lost to TC’s Groenewald 6-1, 6-1 in next round, Hoff won his first match 6-1, 6-0 over St. Joseph and Willowbrook’s Alex Friedman won his first match 6-2, 7-6 but lost in the quarterfinals.
At doubles, Degroot and VanderBurg won their first match 6-2, 6-2 posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the next round. Montini’s other doubles team of Matt Tupy and Jim Westerkamp picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win and Glenbard East’s Robert Meek and Justin Delawder won 6-0, 6-0 in their opening round match.
